Mission Statement

OHAC Mission:
To provide a diversity of swimming instruction opportunities for children and adults in a supportive community setting.

OHAC is 501c(3) nonprofit owing to its primary focus on aquatic instruction and education. A volunteer Board of Directors hires staff to operate two, heated neighborhood pools located less than 1 mile apart in a northeastern Ann Arbor neighborhood. In 2015, we celebrated 50 years of OHAC pools in our community.
We offer a diversity of instruction opportunities for children. For beginners, we offer multiple sessions of swim lessons. For those with more swimming experience, we have a competitive swim team (ages 5-17) that competes in several WISC Conference meets in June and July. We take pride in our team’s fun and supportive atmosphere, and this spirit develops some kids who go on to earn college swimming scholarships and others who have learned a lifelong skill for water safety or physical fitness. We also have a diving team that practices at both our Dolfin Pool (with a smaller dive board) and at an offsite pool with a standard 1-m diving board. Finally, we are relatively unique in Ann Arbor because we offer synchronized swimming instruction, and deliver an end-of-year show that brings out nearly 100 people from the neighborhood each summer.

In 2014, we initiated several other new programs. We offer an eight-week water polo class for those interested in learning more about this popular high school sport. For adult fitness, we offer a master’s swimming program (in early morning hours). At Dolfin Pool, we also maintain one lap-lane during all open swim hours. To encourage a supportive community setting, we offer many social events for members to enjoy during the summer. Annual favorites include an ice cream social to celebrate the end of school, 4th of July cookout and games, a splash contest, cookies and milk night, and a Labor Day party.
Each year, our social committee tries to offer new social activities based on member-driven ideas and initiatives.
